Jonathan Shapiro is a South African cartoonist, known as Zapiro, whose work appears in numerous South African publications and has been exhibited internationally on many occasions. Shapiro started out as the editorial cartoonist of South in 1987. A Fulbright Scholar, he studied media arts at the School of Visual Arts in New York, under the comics masters Art Spiegelman, Will Eisner and Harvey Kurtzman. Zapiro is a cartoonist for several South African newspapers
