Dorp Hotel is a big, rambling old mansion that welcomes friends to enjoy its easy-going charm and breath-taking views of Table Mountain. Situated high above Cape Towns Bo-Kaap, just below the Noon Gun at the very end of Signal Hill, Dorp is brand new, built from the ground up on the footprint of the old Noon Gun Tea Room. Dorp is not for those wanting spa treatments, a gym, tennis or other luxury demands: it’s more like an unofficial club to nourish creative misfits and other like-minded people. There are two pools: one is shared by several rooms that make up the Compound room, while Rose is the only room with its own private pool. Services are concentrated in the lounge-dining room. This is simply marvellous – both airy and cosy, with those magnificent views, and attracting an eclectic mix of locals and travellers; you could spend hours people-watching here.
Mindful that Dorp is within the devout Muslim community of Bo Kaap, no liquor is for sale. Guests are welcome to bring their own, or request that their locker be stocked “at no profit to ourselves”. Or help yourself to owner, Gail Behr’s cabinet. It’s not quite “anything goes” but there is a generosity and decadence of spirit that also threads together the diverse, ebullient team Gail has put together.
